Participants creating paper lace works at Cockpit Deptford

The Art of Craft with Cockpit Studios, Deptford –  July to August 2025

Posted: 30th September 2025

Four of the resident makers at Cockpit Studios ran workshops over the course of this eight-week programme, introducing our participants to their different artistic practices.

Flowers and plants used to create original designs on paper

The programme began by exploring the use of nature to create wonderful artworks using natural dyes, dried flowers and ceramics.

Couching ring with embroidery and thread

Participants were then introduced to a sewing technique called couching, which they learnt using a sewing hoop. Choosing from a variety of different materials such as wire and cocktail sticks participants secured them to their hoops using multicoloured thread, learning a number of stitches along the way.

Participants tracking lace designs

This led us nicely onto lace patterns and drawing, where participants created their own paperwork lace designs. They also used mudlarked ceramics found locally to create zines, drawing the found objects on different pages using our dominant and non dominant hard to overlay drawings.

The programme finished with participants learning about weaving and creating their own woven designs using paper looms and a variety of different coloured paper strips. Our favourite designs were mounted in a journal which our participants took home with them on the last session, with more weaving activities to do from home.

Participants really enjoyed this course and were pleased with the variety of beautiful pieces they created.
