Experiencing the joy of creativity and new hobbies together

Posted: 19th August 2025

Neri* attends weekly creative workshops with her mother, Amy*, who lives with dementia. Their journey with Arts for Dementia began when Neri discovered the charity through the Age UK newsletter. Since then, they’ve taken part in numerous creative programmes across London, from printmaking at Swiss Cottage Library to exploring different artforms at Buckingham Palace’s State Rooms.

“It’s a lovely way to bookend the week… It’s fun for my mum—and for me too.”

For Neri, the sessions offer far more than artistic activity. They are a vital source of routine, companionship and emotional uplift for both her and Amy. “It just feels so comfortable… like-minded people, genuinely kind and caring. There’s laughter, conversation, and the chance to connect with new and familiar faces.”

Amy, who once resisted going out, now looks forward to their regular “library day” and instantly lights up when she sees the facilitators and volunteers.

“She never realised she could draw until she came here. Now she’s a prolific drawer—and seeing her so present, alert and smiling is priceless.”

Neri values that there’s no pressure or judgment—participants are simply offered materials, encouragement, and the freedom to create. The supportive environment also provides moments of respite. “Sometimes my mum takes guidance better from others, so it’s lovely that I can step back while volunteers or facilitators sit with her.”

Neri and Amy’s story demonstrates the power of creative arts to help people living with dementia to live well, and to support family members and carers through meaningful shared experiences and a chance to relax together in a safe space.

“Before this, my mum never had time for creative hobbies. No one had ever put art materials in front of her. These workshops opened up a new world for both of us.”
